The Landing are looking for a Technical Co-Ordinator for our new Maker Lab.

We are offering a unique opportunity to join our team at The Landing MediaCityUK, Salford as a hands-on Technical Co-ordinator for a new maker space. We’re looking for someone to manage the day to day operations of a new maker space based in The Landing at MediaCityUK and help us establish digital making within our wider ecosystem and business support programme. The space will support local businesses and entrepreneurs, students and graduates, industry partners and local residents.

Located in Blue Tower adjacent to the MediaCityUK Studio Block, The Landing is a Technical and Innovation cluster covering 53,500sq ft. The Landing houses over 100 Creative and Technology small businesses and is home to a range of studio and lab facilities including UX/gaming, post-production, virtual reality and cloud innovation. A proposed new makerspace on floor 4 of The Landing will connect with these other spaces and provide companies and innovators across GM with a unique integrated solution for product testing and delivery. Furthermore, it is intended that the makerspace will function also as a community resource to enable residents in Salford to access MediaCityUK technologies for skills development.

The Landing is a Company Limited by Guarantee (CLG) and wholly owned by Salford City Council (SCC).

The Maker Technical Co-ordinator would work directly to the Technical Manager at The Landing but would be further supported by the Head of Programmes and Partnerships and Maker Eco-System Manager on a regular basis. You would be required to engage directly with digital businesses and communities and to ensure the efficient technical setup of the makerspace.

A knowledge of the digital media and creative sector is not essential but would be a significant advantage for candidates.

Full training will be given on all equipment.

 

 

 

Ideally you’ll have:

  • A passion for and working knowledge of digital making technology (3D printing, laser cutters, CAD / Inventor / Illustrator / Cura or similar software)
  • A degree-level or equivalent creative technical qualification, and / or professional experience
  • Keen to constantly learn about new technologies and kit, and find ways to develop your own understanding
  • A good understanding and experience of what how a good maker space works: meeting and greeting, equipment maintenance, inventory management
  • Strong people skills: Ability to talk to lots of different groups of people and make them feel welcome.
  • Problem solving skills: Ability to come up with your own solutions to challenges
  • Ability to be organised and calm under pressure
  • Interest in start ups and small businesses
  • Event support / management experience
  • Customer facing experience
  • Manchester tech community experience (do you attend or run meet ups, university societies, hackathons, volunteering etc?)

    Duties would include:

  • Be first point-of-contact for businesses and individuals using the space
  • Prepare maker environment according to client needs
  • Deliver group sessions and manage visits from 3rd parties
  • Organise and maintain the hardware in the space
  • Liaise directly with 3rd parties delivering workshops and events
  • Input directly into the wider marketing plan for The Landing
  • Support the partnerships team in the preparation of relevant ERDF output reports
  • Undertake such additional duties as are reasonably commensurate with the level of the post.

This post is a maximum of 36hrs per week to be agreed on a flexible basis with the successful candidate. Some evening and weekend work may be required due to the nature of the role.

The role is initially a 12 month contract at a starting salary of £20,000 and will be reviewed thereafter.

  8. 8  Undertake such additional duties as are reasonably commensurate with the level of the post.
